When processing is unfinished

A session may end while a target still feels disturbing. That does not automatically mean treatment failed or that you must keep working alone.

Awaiting qualified clinical review. Educational reference; not a protocol, formal training, supervision, or individualized treatment.

Suggested use: preparation and shared discussion. No qualified clinical review date has been recorded.

When processing is unfinished: Name what is unfinished: Tell your therapist how you feel; Ask what still needs attention; Do not judge the session by one number. Return to the present: Allow time for orientation; Use supports agreed together; Discuss immediate needs. Make a support plan: What feels manageable afterward?; How do I contact my therapist?; What if difficulties continue?. Continue thoughtfully: Agree how the target will be reviewed; Plan the next appointment; Do not resume memory work alone

Why this matters

Closure and a follow-up plan deserve attention whether or not memory-focused work is complete.

Client-facing explanation

Tell your therapist how you feel before leaving. Ask about grounding, the plan for resuming, and how to contact them if difficulties continue.

Clinician reference

Use this guide for shared discussion, adapting language and pacing to the person’s needs.

General sequence and discussion checklist

Optional discussion aid. Selections clear when you leave; this does not assess clinical readiness.

Practical example / documentation consideration

Conversation starter: “What would you like me to know before we choose the next step?”
